Police in Eastern Province have arrested 26-year-old Afunika Phiri for allegedly defiling his 15-year-old stepdaughter.

Confirming the incident in a statement to Kalemba, Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba said the suspect was arrested after his 33-year-old wife reported the matter to Vubwi Police Station.

According to police, the suspect allegedly abused the victim repeatedly while taking advantage of the mother's absence from home.

Mr. Mweemba explained that the victim reportedly endured the abuse for some time after being threatened that both she and her mother would be chased away if she disclosed the matter.

The case later came to light after the victim confided in a guidance teacher at her school following complaints of pain.

Police officers moved swiftly and apprehended the suspect, who is expected to appear in court soon. A police medical report form has been issued to facilitate medical examination of the victim.
