Elton Mulenga, Two Others Die in Kapiri Road Traffic Accident

Three lives, including that of 38-year-old Elton Mulenga, have been lost following a tragic road traffic accident involving a speeding minibus along the Great North Road in Kapiri Mposhi.

The accident occurred yesterday around 09:40 hours in the Luanshimba area when a Nissan Caravan minibus, registration number CAK 4236ZM, carrying 18 passengers lost control and overturned into a drainage.

Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed that the vehicle was being driven by Watson Sililo, 36, of Lusaka West, who was travelling towards Kabwe when the journey suddenly turned tragic.

Preliminary investigations indicate that excessive speed may have caused the driver to lose control, forcing the vehicle off the road before overturning violently into a nearby drainage.

The impact claimed the lives of three passengers at the scene. The deceased have been identified as Elton Mulenga, an unidentified adult male, and a female juvenile whose identity is yet to be confirmed.

Fifteen other passengers — five males and ten females — sustained serious injuries and were rushed to Kapiri Mposhi District Hospital, where they are currently receiving medical treatment.

The bodies of the deceased have been deposited at Kapiri Mposhi Urban Hospital mortuary awaiting identification and postmortem examinations.

Police have launched investigations into the accident and have urged motorists to exercise caution on the roads.

“We urge all motorists to observe speed limits and strictly adhere to road traffic regulations to prevent unnecessary loss of life,” Mr. Chilabi stated.
