Katete Woman Hospitalised After Husband Allegedly Burns Her with Hot Porridge and Charcoal

Crime News | Katete District | April 15, 2026

A 21-year-old woman of Katete District in Eastern Province is currently receiving medical treatment after allegedly being severely assaulted by her husband, who is accused of pouring hot porridge and burning charcoal on her following a domestic dispute.

According to Eastern Province Police Commanding Officer Robertson Mweemba, the incident occurred on April 15, 2026, around 18:50 hours in Ibex Township.

Police have identified the suspect as John Phiri (26), a resident of the same township.

Brief facts indicate that earlier in the day, around 17:00 hours, the victim had left home to visit her aunt within the area after her husband went out to watch a football match. Before leaving, she instructed her 17-year-old niece to prepare nshima for the household.

Upon returning home at about 18:00 hours, she allegedly found her husband angry and accusing her of infidelity. Police say the suspect pushed her to the ground during the confrontation.

Mr. Mweemba stated that while the victim was on the ground, the suspect allegedly took a pot of hot porridge from a brazier and poured it onto her pelvic area before emptying burning charcoal onto her.

The victim sustained severe burn injuries and is currently receiving medical attention. Police confirmed that the suspect fled the scene immediately after the incident, and a manhunt has been launched to locate and apprehend him.

Authorities have strongly condemned gender-based violence and urged members of the public to report domestic abuse cases promptly.
