A two-year-old boy has died following a house fire that occurred in Livingstone District in the Southern Province.

Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo identified the deceased child as Senzani Tembo.

The tragic incident happened around 07:30 hours after a house belonging to Conscious Tembo (36) caught fire at the Railways Museum Compound in Livingstone.

Preliminary investigations indicate that around 07:00 hours, Mr. Tembo was in the bathroom preparing to go to church while the child was sleeping in the bedroom.

Meanwhile, the child's mother Mutale Mulenga (33) and her niece were reportedly sitting outside the house attending to another child.

Police say Mr. Tembo heard the child crying from inside the house and attempted to rescue him, but the flames had already intensified, preventing him from accessing the room. He then rushed outside to call for help.

The Livingstone City Council Fire Department responded to the scene, but the house was already engulfed in flames, resulting in extensive damage.

All household property was destroyed in the fire and the value of the damaged items has not yet been determined.

The body of the child was later retrieved and taken to the Botoka Mortuary at Livingstone University Teaching Hospital where it is awaiting a postmortem examination.

Mr. Namalongo said the cause of the fire has not yet been established and an inquiry file has been opened. Police have indicated that no foul play is currently suspected.
