A 35-year-old murder suspect, Allan Chibuye, has died while in police custody at Bauleni Police Post in Lusaka in what authorities have described as a suspected self-inflicted death.

According to a statement issued by the Zambia Police Service, the incident is believed to have occurred between 04:00 and 06:00 hours on March 24, 2026.

Fellow detainees alerted officers on duty after discovering Mr. Chibuye unresponsive inside the holding cell. Police spokesperson Godfrey Chilabi confirmed that officers found him with a fabric strap around his neck, suspended from a burglar bar on the cell’s toilet window.

He was immediately rushed to hospital but was pronounced dead upon arrival.

Mr. Chibuye had been arrested on March 23, 2026 in Kasisi and was facing allegations of murdering his cousin, Gibson Zulu, in Matero on March 8, 2026.

The body has since been deposited at the University Teaching Hospital mortuary where a post-mortem examination is expected to be conducted.

Police say investigations are ongoing to establish the full circumstances surrounding the incident.
