Chililabombwe Municipal Council Destroys 300 Boxes of Rotten Fish
Chililabombwe – March 7, 2026
The Chililabombwe Municipal Council, through its Department of Public Health, has disposed of 300 boxes of decomposed fish weighing about 8.5 kilograms each. The fish formed part of a larger consignment of 2,600 boxes that were being transported to Kasumbalesa.
According to the council, the food products failed to comply with the Food Safety Act No. 7 of 2019. The truck carrying the consignment was first noticed by council officers on February 27, 2026 after maggots were seen underneath the vehicle while it was parked along the T3 Road.
Chief Health Inspector Mr. Emmanuel Kasongo explained that the truck, bearing registration number HZ 56 WC GP, was immediately detained following the discovery.
A joint inspection involving the Zambia Revenue Authority, Zambia Police Service, and the Court was later conducted. The inspection revealed that part of the consignment had decomposed and was unfit for human consumption.
Following the findings, the council condemned and safely disposed of 300 boxes of the fish in accordance with public health regulations. The transporter has also been penalized.
Mr. Kasongo has urged businesses dealing in cold storage and perishable goods to quickly seek help from relevant authorities whenever they experience challenges that could compromise food safety.
He noted that the incident is believed to have resulted from a disruption in the cold storage system during transportation.
The council reaffirmed its commitment to safeguarding public health and ensuring that food sold to the public is safe for consumption.
