Fabricated Treason Charges Against Mundubile, Makebi Setting Dangerous Precedent — UN Special Rapporteur

United Nations Special Rapporteur on the Rights to Freedom of Assembly and Association Gina Romero has advised Zambian authorities to release all political detainees and restore democratic accountability.

Romero says following the post-election period, violations involving widespread arrests of opposition supporters and what she described as concocted charges of treason against senior opposition alliance leadership set a dangerous precedent.

Romero expressed concern over what she described as a deteriorating democratic and human rights environment in Zambia and called on Government to uphold democratic integrity and immediately cease the criminalisation of political dissent.

“The Special Rapporteur on the rights to freedom of assembly and of association, Gina Romero, today (Wednesday), expressed grave concern over the deteriorating democratic and human rights environment in Zambia,” the statement read, reports News Diggers.

NRPUP Presidential candidate Brian Mundubile and running mate Makebi Zulu, along with 16 others, were last weekend arrested and charged with one count of treason.

The suspects are now detained at Mukobeko Maximum Correctional Facility in Kabwe and await a court appearance where the State will endeavour to prove the treason allegations levelled against them.
