Government Responds To UN
Government has told UN Special Rapporteur Gina Romero to let the courts decide whether treason charges against Brian Mundubile, Makebi Zulu and 16 others are valid, rather than an international mandate holder determining the matter through a press release.
Government rejected Romero's description of the charges as "concocted" and her description of the accused as "political detainees," saying membership of an opposition party does not place anyone above the law.
Government affirmed that the accused are entitled to due process, legal representation, humane treatment and a fair trial before a competent court.
It further said Zambia remains open to engagement with United Nations human rights mechanisms, but maintained that such engagement should be based on accuracy, objectivity and impartiality.
