Calls Grow for Mundubile’s Release Amid Unverified Reports About His Health
Calls are growing for the immediate release of NRPUP leader and former presidential candidate Brian Mundubile, following claims circulating on social media concerning his health and conditions while in custody.
A statement circulating online claims that Mundubile is unwell and allegedly has limited access to medical facilities. The statement calls on President Hakainde Hichilema to release Mundubile and allow him to return to his normal activities.
The same statement further alleges that Mundubile has been denied proper food and water and that some visitors have allegedly been turned away. It also claims that he has not been able to meet with his lawyer.
Calls for His Release
Supporters and political commentators calling for Mundubile’s release say the former presidential candidate should be afforded due process and access to legal representation and appropriate medical attention if required.
The statement also refers to concerns previously raised by the United Nations Special Rapporteur regarding the treatment of opposition figures following Zambia’s 2026 general elections.
Mundubile and Makebi Zulu are among opposition figures facing serious criminal allegations. The cases remain subject to the legal process, and allegations against the accused should be determined through the courts.
What Is Known
The latest claims about Mundubile’s alleged condition have circulated through social media and have not been independently verified. Further information from his lawyers, family, prison authorities or other official sources would be necessary to establish his current condition and circumstances of detention.
Members of the public are encouraged to verify information before sharing reports concerning the health, detention or legal status of political figures.
