A 22-year-old man in South Africa’s Northern Cape Province has been sentenced to 20 years’ direct imprisonment for raping his 42-year-old mother at their home in Carnarvon.

The incident occurred on November 23, 2025, while the victim was asleep.

According to police, the woman woke up and realised that her son was the perpetrator. She screamed and confronted him, prompting him to leave the house. She then alerted her husband, but the accused fled.

Police opened investigations, with the matter later assigned to Detective Constable Leevirne Nathalie Raaf of the Carnarvon Family Violence, Child Protection and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit.

The accused was subsequently arrested after DNA analysis linked him to the offence. Detective Constable Raaf also successfully opposed his applications for bail during his court appearances.

On Friday, August 28, 2026, the Carnarvon Regional Court convicted the man of rape and sentenced him to 20 years’ direct imprisonment.

The court further ordered that he be placed on South Africa’s National Register for Sex Offenders and declared him unfit to possess a firearm.

Pixley ka Seme District Commissioner Major General Nomana Mtukushe commended Detective Constable Raaf for her dedication and thorough investigative work, saying her efforts contributed to securing the conviction and sentence.
