St Agatha’s Relic Sparks Debate Over Catholic Faith

A picture taken in Sicily, Italy, has sparked debate on social media about Catholic faith after a Catholic Archbishop was seen holding the skull of St Agatha of Sicily during a veneration ceremony in Catania.

St Agatha is regarded by Catholics as a saint and martyr who died in the year 251. She is traditionally remembered as a virgin who was tortured and killed because of her Christian faith.

The ceremony is known as the Veneration of Relics, a Catholic practice in which the remains or personal belongings associated with saints are treated with religious honour and devotion.

The relics of St Agatha have been preserved and are kept in Catania, Sicily, where she is deeply revered by the faithful. Her annual celebrations attract large numbers of Catholic worshippers.
