Zambia Courts Closed as Presidential Election Challenge Deadline Nears

Courts in Zambia's capital Lusaka and elsewhere in the country are reportedly closed today, Monday, which is the final day for challenging the presidential election results.

Police have reportedly sealed off several courts, including the High Court and the building housing the Constitutional Court, with lawyers reportedly being told to leave.

Opposition candidate Brian Mundubile, who reportedly secured 38 percent of the vote, has said he plans to challenge the election result, citing alleged irregularities in the electoral process.

Mundubile is currently reported to be in hiding following the arrest of several opposition figures and the reported killing of former minister Mutotwe Kafwaya during a security operation.

European Union election observers said the August 13 vote was largely peaceful, but raised concerns over restrictions on the opposition, media freedom and problems encountered during the vote-counting process.

President Hakainde Hichilema has meanwhile been declared the winner of the presidential election, reportedly securing about 60 percent of the vote. His inauguration is scheduled for September 1.

The reported closure of the courts comes on the final day of the legal window for challenging the presidential election results. The circumstances surrounding the reported court closures and access restrictions remain subject to confirmation from the relevant authorities.
