Matero Man Divorces Wife After Lover Offers Him K7,000 – But Money Never Came
During the hearing, Innocent Chileshe told Magistrate Lewis Mumba that his wife’s lover, Innocent Mutonga, offered him money in exchange for a divorce so the couple could freely marry.
“Your honour, this man was in a sexual relationship with my wife, and she even became pregnant for him. I was the one taking care of the pregnancy, yet he is the one responsible. He’s a married man,” Chileshe testified.
The court had earlier ordered Mutonga to compensate Chileshe with K15,000 for adultery. However, Mutonga allegedly approached Chileshe privately with a new offer — K7,000 in exchange for a divorce.
“I accepted the offer and divorced my wife. I even gave him the divorce papers, but he never paid me the money as promised,” Chileshe said, adding that he still shouldered the burden of supporting his ex-wife and the child.
Magistrate Mumba ruled Mutonga guilty of contempt of court for failing to fulfill the original compensation order and fined him K165, or 14 days in remand if unpaid.
