Police in Choma are investigating a shooting incident in which a landlord shot an unidentified suspect who allegedly broke into a tenant’s house at Green Park in the Kakompe area.

The Zambia Police Service in Choma District of Southern Province is investigating a shooting incident reported at Choma Central Police Station on March 4, 2026, at around 23:00 hours.

Southern Province Police Commanding Officer Moono Namalongo said the incident occurred between 22:00 hours and 22:56 hours at Green Park in the Kakompe area.

A 36-year-old businessman reported that he had shot at an unknown male suspect who allegedly broke into the house of one of his tenants who was out of town at the time.

According to police, the landlord was inside his house within the same yard when he noticed that the internet connection at the premises had been interrupted. He went outside to investigate the problem while armed with a pistol.

Upon stepping outside, he allegedly saw two masked suspects emerging from the tenant’s house armed with golf sticks and a knife.

Police say one of the suspects advanced toward him with a golf stick. The landlord reportedly fired a warning shot, but the suspect continued advancing, forcing him to fire again.

The suspect later ran out through a small door leading to the main gate while the second suspect jumped over the wall fence and escaped.

When police officers arrived at the scene, the suspect who had been shot was found lying face down in a pool of rainwater outside the wall fence, about 20 metres from the shooting point.

A physical inspection revealed two bullet wounds on the ribs and bleeding from the nose. Officers also recovered several items from the suspect including pliers, a screwdriver, a CCTV camera, a television remote control, and a small feature phone.

At the tenant’s house, police discovered that the mortice lock on the main door had been damaged, and household items were scattered inside. A television set was also reported missing.

Investigators later recovered two golf sticks in the yard and a knife at the gate. Fibre cables for the internet connection were also found uprooted, which is believed to have caused the earlier internet disruption.

The body of the deceased suspect has been taken to Choma General Hospital Mortuary awaiting identification, postmortem examination and burial.

Police say investigations into the matter are ongoing.
